Deaf Awareness Week

With Deaf Awareness week falling this week 2nd-8th May it has been fascinating, educating and uplifting to see what and how the deaf community can really indulge in music.

For something you may have thought not possible, let us enlighten you...

Let us introduce you to Deaf Rave. "Deaf Rave provides entertainment with music, sign song and visual performances to an all-inclusive audience, globally and across the UK." Founded by Troi Lee aka DJ Chinaman, it's both inspiring and reassuring to see something is out there and actively present to all-inclusive communities.

From his personal experience of being knocked back from a nightclub with a group of deaf friends who were seen signing to each other in the queue, Troi describes this as "the most discriminating moment of his life" - Understandably.

From here on he launched this platform Deaf Rave with the aim "to unite everyone through the love and passion for music. Promoting our unique Deaf/ Disabled identity and teaching everyone about Deaf Culture."

Hats off to him for achieving a successful venture which not only encourages inclusivity, it organises parties, movies, festivals, DJ workshops, sign language and deaf awareness workshops as well as engaging videos including the following by Resident Advisor, titled A Sonic Pulse: The Deaf Experience of Electronic Music - well worth a watch:

A piece of technology that is more frequently being used in the gaming and virtual reality worlds includes a Woojer vest which syncs the music viscerally enabling deaf DJ's to feel the beat of the music as they mix.

If that hasn't inspired you, we don't know what will.

Last week's post includes another beautifully inclusive piece of music combined with art and the deaf community. Check back here to see what it was if you haven't already.

If you want to check out a film, Sound of Metal IMDb is recommended to move you in a way you may not have been before. We featured this recommendation in our blog post back in February during National Tinnitus Awareness Week. You can view that here.
